South Sudan is planning to expand its diplomatic presence abroad with proposals to establish new embassies in several countries, the Foreign Affairs Ministry said.

Thomas Kenneth, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, told Radio Tamazuj that the government approved the plans last year to open additional diplomatic missions.

“It was approved by the leadership of the country last year. The plan is that we need to have embassies in Algeria, Brazil, Djibouti, Australia and Rwanda, and a consulate in Mombasa,” he said.

The ministry also did not provide a timeline for when the new missions would be opened or whether any of them are already in the process of being established.

Kenneth said the initiative remains in its early stages and is subject to diplomatic procedures before full establishment.

“These are plans, and of course there are diplomatic processes involved before establishment,” he said.

His remarks follow reports suggesting that South Sudan may have already opened an embassy in Australia, which he said still requires confirmation despite the earlier approval.

The proposed expansion comes as the country faces financial constraints, including challenges in funding some of its existing foreign missions.

Responding to concerns about budget limitations, Kenneth acknowledged the difficulties but expressed optimism they would not derail the plans.

“Yes, we have financial challenges in the country, but we believe they will not be permanent. We are hopeful that, over time, these challenges will be addressed,” he said.

He added that the establishment of the new embassies is part of a broader strategic effort by the government to strengthen its diplomatic engagement.
