The South Sudan Human Rights Defenders Network (SSHRDN) on Monday welcomed the official launch of the National Voter Education Campaign under the theme “Your Vote is Your Future,” saying it marks a critical milestone in South Sudan’s democratic transition.
A statement extended to this publication said the campaign provides an important opportunity to empower citizens with the knowledge required to participate meaningfully in the country’s first elections in more than a decade.
“Voter education is a cornerstone of any credible electoral process. Beyond explaining voting procedures, it equips citizens to make informed choices, understand their rights and responsibilities, reject misinformation, and participate peacefully in shaping the future of their country,” the statement reads in part. “SSHRDN commends the National Elections Commission (NEC) and all stakeholders involved in launching the campaign and encourages sustained collaboration to ensure that voter education reaches every corner of the country.”
“Particular attention should be given to women, youth, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons, returnees, rural communities, and other marginalized groups to ensure that no eligible citizen is left behind,” it added.
James Bidal, the Head of SSHRDN Secretariat, emphasized that meaningful voter participation requires an enabling civic and political environment where freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, association, and access to information are fully respected.
“Voter education cannot flourish where fear prevails. Citizens must be free to ask questions, express opinions, access information, and engage in political dialogue without intimidation or harassment. Protecting civic space is inseparable from protecting electoral integrity,” he stated. “An informed and engaged citizenry is the foundation of democracy. We call upon all actors to protect civic space, promote peaceful participation, and ensure that these elections become a milestone for unity, accountability, and lasting peace.”
He further said voter education is not only about teaching citizens how to vote; it is about empowering them to understand that their voice matters and that they have a role in shaping the future of South Sudan.
SSHRDN encouraged all citizens to participate in voter education activities actively, reject misinformation and hate speech, and contribute to a peaceful and inclusive electoral process.
