The police in Warrap State’s Kuajok Town on Saturday apprehended a former legislator, Ariech Mayar Ariech, for criticizing Warrap State Governor Bol Wek Agoth for failing to control insecurity and poor governance.
In 2010, Mayar was elected to represent Kuac South Payam in Warrap State’s Gogrial West County on the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) Party ticket. He served until his removal by President Salva Kiir earlier this month on the recommendation of Governor Wek.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Monday morning, Warrap State Information Minister William Wol Mayom said the former lawmaker was arrested after he disseminated false information about the conflict in Tonj North County on his Facebook page.
“The false information he posted was that he claimed over 37 people had been killed and 173 others were wounded in the recent Tonj North incident, which was not true,” he said. “Actually, he has also posted some pictures on his social media platform (Facebook page) that are not relevant to the context of the incident. He shared pictures of burned houses and said a town in Warrap was burnt to ashes, which was not true.”
Minister Wol blamed the accused for inciting communal violence against the governor.
“He has also called on all communities to reject the sitting governor of Warrap State, Bol Wek Agoth, describing him as a weak and incompetent governor,” he added.
Meanwhile, Bona Malual, Chairperson for Civil Society Network in Warrap State, said the arrested politician was eying the governor’s position before and urged authorities to arraign him in court.
“On behalf of the civil society, we are calling upon the state government to take him to court for proper accountability because the way he was campaigning was not acceptable,” he said.
