Policeman arrested for killing Bentiu businessman

The police in Unity State’s Bentiu IDP Camp have arrested one of their officers for killing a businessman identified as Lony Kuok Chuol, who sells telephone airtime, on Tuesday morning.

John Malieth, the police mouthpiece in Unity State, told Radio Tamzaju on Tuesday that a cop inadvertently killed the businessman at his shop in sector two, block 7, of the IDP camp, when targeting gangsters who were fighting in the area.

“A gang group were fight in the same sector two, and the policeman started shooting in the air because he wanted to contain the situation, but unfortunately, the bullet went and killed an innocent man,” he said. “The incident occurred today, Tuesday, at around 10 a.m., and the deceased was an innocent person. The police arrested the suspect.”

Malieth said the deceased, Lony Kuok Chuol, from Mayiendit County, died at Bentiu Hospital.

“The policeman shot him by mistake and did not intend to kill him,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mawich Gatjiek Jiech, the chairperson of the Mayiendit Community in Bentiu IDPs camp, told this publication on Wednesday morning that the body of the deceased was taken to his hometown of Tutnyang Payam for burial.

“I just heard that the policeman who murdered Lony Kuok Chuol was arrested by security personnel because I was busy looking for a way to take the body to Tutnyang Payam in Mayiendit County,” he said.
