A joint youth group from the Ngok Dinka in the Abyei Special Administrative Area and the Misseriya tribe in Sudan’s West Kordofan State has been tasked by the local leaders to protect the Amiet Market zone and prevent further deadly clashes and property looting, community authorities have said.
On 15 September, violence erupted between elements from Misseriya and Ngok Dinka around Amiet Market, with the Dinka Community saying more than sixty of its members were wounded and nine killed.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday, Bulabek Deng Kuol, Paramount Chief of Ngok Dinka in Abyei Special Administrative Area, said youth from both sides have stepped up security measures to prevent further insecurity, deadly clashes and looting at the zonal market.
“The Joint Peace Committees between Ngok Dinka and Misseriya communities are in communication, and the youth from both sides have agreed to provide security in Amiet Market until the tribal leaders come up with binding resolutions,” he said. “The security situation has returned to normal, but trade has not yet resumed.”
