Morobo County outlaws narcotics, illicit alcohol consumption

Authorities in Morobo County in Central Equatoria State have imposed an immediate ban on the consumption of marijuana, khat (locally known as marungi) and illicit alcoholic drinks, in a crackdown aimed at curbing substance abuse among young people, officials said.

County authorities said the directive, issued on Tuesday, targets what they described as rising use of harmful substances linked to unemployment, idleness and social disorder among youth.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday, Morobo County Commissioner Joseph Mawa said the order seeks to halt the sale, distribution and public consumption of the substances, and would be enforced in coordination with health officials, security agencies and community leaders.

He said measures would include action against supply networks, prevention of open consumption and public awareness campaigns.

“The focus is to stop the sale and distribution, prevent public consumption, and deal with those involved in trafficking these harmful substances,” Mawa said. “We will also carry out community awareness so people understand the reasons behind this decision.”

Mawa added that those found violating the order, particularly traffickers and suppliers, would face prosecution.

“We will hold them accountable and take them to court,” he said. “The youth are the backbone of this country, and we must protect their future.”

Religious leaders in the county welcomed the move, saying it could help reduce crime and improve behaviour among young people.

Pastor Peter Modi said authorities were within their rights to restrict substances linked to criminal activity and social harm.

“If these substances are contributing to crime and social divisions, then community leaders have the right to restrict them to protect the youth,” he said.

However, some residents expressed concern that enforcement could prove challenging, as consumption of khat and illicit alcohol is reportedly widespread among young people in the area.
