Growing security concerns in border areas east of Sudan’s Blue Nile Region have displaced an estimated 10,000 people from several villages in the Al-Qadalu locality to the areas of Matongiya and Mokla, according to local sources.
The displacement has affected the villages of Minza, Jabal Nimr, Mangelnq Al-Jawani, Baqoun, Jabal Al-Noum, Amri and Shajmo, amid fears of a possible attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The latest displacement follows what local sources described as reconnaissance movements in the area in recent weeks, prompting many families to leave their homes for fear of further deterioration in the security situation.
The affected villages are located along the border between Blue Nile Region and Ethiopia. According to local accounts, displaced people are facing difficult humanitarian conditions in the areas where they have sought refuge.
“We need food and shelter after leaving our supplies behind; we need coffee, sugar, cooking oil and plastic sheeting,” said Awad Ismail, a displaced resident from Minza. He said they are sleeping in the open.
Another displaced man, Mohamed Afoudi, said they are exhausted, and that they left their belongings behind.
“We need shelter and security,” he said, adding that they were searching for a safe place out of fear of attacks, injustice and darkness.
Jamal Mohamed, a community activist in Mokla, appealed to the government and humanitarian organizations to assist the displaced.
“I appeal to the government and international humanitarian organizations to extend a helping hand and address the shortages in essential needs among those arriving from Minza and the Ethiopian border,” he said.
The displaced urgently need food, drinking water, shelter and healthcare, amid calls for humanitarian organizations to intervene and provide essential assistance.
This publication has so far been unable to independently verify whether aid has reached those fleeing the affected areas. It has also been unable to obtain official comment from the Humanitarian Aid Commission in Blue Nile Region regarding the situation of the displaced.
Activists on social media have circulated photographs and figures that they said illustrate the scale of the suffering and humanitarian needs. Radio Tamazuj has not been able to independently verify the authenticity of that information.
Security concerns remain in the area as residents await further developments, amid fears that displacement could increase if the security situation deteriorates further.
The developments come as fighting continues in parts of southern and southeastern Blue Nile Region, particularly in Kurmuk and Geissan localities, raising concerns over the impact of the security situation on civilians and patterns of displacement in the area.
