Germany’s new ambassador to South Sudan, Sebastian Brökelmann, said on Monday that Berlin’s priority would be supporting implementation of the country’s revitalised peace agreement and pushing for judicial, security and economic reforms.
President Salva Kiir Mayardit formally accredited Brökelmann during a ceremony at the State House in Juba.
“Our political priority remains the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement (R-ARCSS),” Brökelmann said, calling for genuine dialogue among all signatories and other stakeholders, including civil society.
He said reforms were needed to establish a permanent constitution, unify military forces and create a security environment that would allow South Sudanese to exercise their democratic rights. Economic reforms should also strengthen public financial management and tackle corruption, he said.
Germany will continue to support South Sudan’s security and stability as well as humanitarian and development efforts, Brökelmann said. Berlin will also continue contributing to the U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), including efforts to protect civilians and facilitate humanitarian aid.
Germany is a longstanding partner and donor to South Sudan, supporting the country on its path towards peace, democracy, the rule of law and economic prosperity.
Brökelmann said he was honoured to take up the post and pledged to further strengthen bilateral relations between Germany and South Sudan.
