Two security personnel were shot dead in Western Bahr el Ghazal state on Friday evening, allegedly by armed youths from neighbouring Gogrial East County in Warrap State, authorities said.
The National Security officer, 2nd Lt. Majok Mangok Mawein, and assistant police officer Kur Abiel were killed in Marial Baai Payam in Jur River County, according to Santino Manut Akech, the county commissioner.
“The National Security’s 2nd Lt. Majok Mangok Mawein and the Assistant Police Officer Kur Abiel were killed in Marial Baai Payam on Friday evening after two armed riders shot them dead,” Manut told Radio Tamazuj over the weekend.
Manut said the assailants abandoned their motorcycle after the attack and fled. Authorities seized the motorcycle and were investigating the incident, he said.
The Marial Wau and Marial Baai communities in Jur River County and the Apuk community in neighbouring Gogrial East County have been involved in a long-running border dispute that has resulted in deaths and the looting of property.
Manut said he had tried to contact the Gogrial East county commissioner to coordinate efforts to prevent further attacks but had been unable to reach him.
“I have been calling him since the day before yesterday (Friday), and I wanted to tell him to control his people to stop the attacks on our people,” Manut said. “I have already talked to my people in Greater Marial Wau, and they have not been attacking anyone.”
Efforts to reach officials in Warrap State and Gogrial East County for comment were unsuccessful.
