At least four passengers were killed and seven others injured in a road attack by armed assailants on a commercial truck in Duk County, Jonglei State, on Saturday morning, a local official said.
Duk County Commissioner Peter Latjor Chuol told Radio Tamazuj that the truck was heading to the neighbouring Uror County to deliver goods when it was attacked on the outskirts of Poktap town.
“A truck loaded with food items like sugar, beans, and flour was attacked between Duk Payuel and Duk Panyang. This truck had initially arrived from Bor with cargo to be emptied in Yuai town of Uror county. While heading for Yuai, it fell in an ambush at 8 am. Four people were killed, and seven others, including a Darfuri businessman, were injured,” he said.
In another incident, Commissioner Latjor said a man was killed and a woman with a baby strapped on her back was abducted while collecting fish on Friday.
“In Ayueldit Boma of Duk Padiet Payamm, a man identified as Malou Par Gatjang was killed while a woman with her six-month baby was abducted on Friday. These people were attacked near a stream while collecting fish,” he added.
In these incidents, Latjor faulted armed youth suspected to have come from the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) of involvement.
However, Abraham Kelang, the GPAA Information Minister, said they are not aware of any attack carried out by their youths in Duk County.
“We are not aware of these attacks. The two governments are opposed to criminals because they are our common enemy. Jonglei government should, therefore, officially inform us of such incidents,” he said.
