A fire broke out in a section of Konyokonyo market in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, destroying goods, particularly in stalls selling mobile phones, city authorities said.
Juba City Mayor Christopher Sarafino Wani said the blaze affected shops in the northern part of the market on Tuesday morning.
The manor further said the cause of the fire was not immediately clear, and authorities have launched an investigation.
Firefighters and city council teams responded shortly after the incident was reported and managed to contain the blaze, Wani told reporters at the scene.
About 12 shops were destroyed, he said, urging traders to comply with a city-led reorganization plan aimed at reducing the risk of future fires.
Fires are common in Juba’s markets, often linked to poor electrical connections and overcrowding.
In December 2025, a major fire tore through part of the city’s Custom Market, destroying multiple shops near the South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation compound in the Nyakuron area and prompting a large emergency response.
Authorities at the time pledged compensation for affected traders, though it remains unclear whether that support has been delivered.
