Family of detained ex-petroleum official seeks charges or release

Former undersecretary Deng Lual Wol

The family of Eng. Deng Lual Wol, a former undersecretary in the Ministry of Petroleum, has expressed concern over his continued detention by security authorities since Feb. 27, 2026, saying no formal charges have been brought against him.

In a Thursday statement issued by his wife, Nawal Abdullah Ali, the family said Wol’s detention without disclosure of specific reasons amounts to a violation of constitutional guarantees and due process rights.

The family said it has not been informed of the circumstances surrounding his arrest, adding that the lack of transparency undermines confidence in the justice system.

While expressing confidence in the country’s judiciary, the family said allegations against Wol appear to be “purely political in nature” and lack “clear legal evidence.”

They called on authorities to either present Wol for a public and fair trial or release him unconditionally, and urged civil society groups and national institutions to press for transparency and accountability in the case.

The statement said the family will pursue all available legal channels and insisted on their right to know the reasons for his detention.

The detentions of Wol and several other former government officials since the beginning of this year appear to be part of a broader sweep targeting high-profile figures in the finance and security sectors.

Wol was summoned to the National Security Service (NSS) for questioning on Feb. 27 but was subsequently placed in detention.
