A free eye treatment and surgery camp targeting 1,150 patients is underway in Malakal, the capital of Upper Nile State, drawing residents from across the region.
The two-week campaign, launched on May 7 under the supervision of the deputy state governor, is being organized by Caritas Diocese of Malakal.
Upper Nile State Information Minister Peter Ngwojo Akwiny told Radio Tamazuj over the weekend that the initiative would significantly improve access to eye care services in the state.
“People are coming from across the 13 counties of the state and even from the northern parts of neighboring Jonglei State. A total of 1,150 people will receive eye treatment, including surgery and corrective glasses,” he said.
One beneficiary, Simon Nyareth, said he had visited Malakal Hospital twice during the campaign and received treatment, describing the initiative as a relief for many patients.
“Many patients have problems such as cataracts and glaucoma. I went there on Friday, and the following day I received glasses and took my uncle for a successful surgery. We are very thankful,” he said.
Nyareth, a Malakal resident and local youth leader, urged authorities and partners to establish a permanent eye care unit in the town to serve residents who cannot afford to travel outside the state for treatment.
