Doctors Union plans free surgery outreach in Terekeka

The South Sudan Doctors Union announced Thursday it will hold a five-day free surgical camp in Terekeka County, Central Equatoria State, late this month to provide life-saving operations and other medical services.

The campaign, scheduled for Jan. 23-28, 2026, aims to increase healthcare access in Central Equatoria State.

Union officials said the outreach responds to recent cuts in health facilities and chronic service shortages in the area.

“The aim of this medical and surgical outreach is to increase access to the people of Central Equatoria,” said Dr. Luka Dut, secretary-general of the union.

Dut said services would include health education, general medical care and surgical interventions for the community.

The union’s plans were discussed Thursday in a meeting with Central Equatoria State Governor Emmanuel Adil Anthony in Juba. Dut said the governor expressed willingness to support the union’s activities and broader health sector needs.

“We have asked His Excellency to support the health sector,” Dut said. He said discussions also covered financial support for state health workers specializing abroad.

Derick Derickson, press secretary for the governor, confirmed Anthony pledged moral and financial backing for the surgical camp.

“The governor pledges full support to make sure that this initiative is realized,” Derickson said.

He said state leadership commended the union for the initiative and emphasized the priority of expanding healthcare, particularly in remote areas.
