At least 14 people were killed, including five children, and several others injured after a cattle camp was attacked on the outskirts of Juba, officials said.
More than 2,000 head of cattle were stolen during the raid, which took place Thursday night at Wungok cattle camp in Rejaf, in Central Equatoria state. The camp belongs to members of the Dinka Bor community.
Nyamar Lony Thichiot, Jonglei state’s information minister, told Radio Tamazuj on Sunday that the attackers were suspected to be armed youth from Terekeka County in Central Equatoria state. She said authorities were working to restore calm.
“Fourteen people were killed, including five children, and several others were injured, though I don’t have the exact figure,” she said. “About 2,000 head of cattle were also taken.”
Thichiot said Jonglei officials had yet to receive formal communication from their counterparts in Central Equatoria due to ongoing funeral arrangements for a senior cleric but added that engagement between the two sides was underway.
Attempts to reach Central Equatoria state’s information minister for comment were unsuccessful.
Civil society activist Ter Manyang Gatwech condemned the attack and called for dialogue to prevent further violence.
“These cattle raids are not new in South Sudanese society. I urge genuine dialogue to avoid escalation,” he said.
