Bor community protests rumored removal of county commissioner

Bor County Commissioner James Gai Makor

Community leaders in Bor County, Jonglei State, are protesting a rumored plan to remove the county commissioner, warning the move could revive instability.

The Bor Community Leadership sent a letter to Jonglei State Governor Dr. Riek Gai Kok on Monday expressing “strong opposition” to reports that County Commissioner James Gai Makor would be replaced by Ateny Pech Arik.

The letter described the circulating information as disturbing and cautioned that such a change could spark division. The outcry echoes protests from April 2023, when Pech’s prior appointment to the commissioner post was blocked by President Salva Kiir following a community petition.

Pech was mayor of the Bor Municipal Council before being relieved of duty that same year.

Dr. Angok Kuol Tiir, the community’s chairperson, wrote that the new rumors have caused “deep anxiety” among residents, fearing a return of past tensions.

The letter urged the government to prioritize stability and fairness, noting that many qualified candidates from the county are available for leadership roles. It requested that if a change is made, “another capable son or daughter of Bor County be considered.”

While reaffirming support for Kiir and the governor, the community appealed for careful handling of the situation to protect local peace.

Manath Gany, press secretary for the governor’s office, confirmed to Radio Tamazuj the authenticity of the community’s letter and said it had been forwarded to the office of the president.
