Life-saving nutrition supplies have reached mothers and children suffering from acute malnutrition in Jonglei’s Akobo County after violence disrupted humanitarian access in the area, local officials said Monday.
Akobo County in Jonglei state has faced worsening humanitarian conditions since forces loyal to the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) retook Akobo town from government troops on April 13.
John Wiyual Lul, the SPLM-IO-appointed Akobo county commissioner, told Radio Tamazuj that aid agencies delivered emergency nutrition supplies to Akobo town on Friday and Saturday.
“There is relief for mothers and children suffering from malnutrition,” Lul said. “The World Food Programme (WFP) and Save the Children delivered essential nutrition supplements by helicopter to help address malnutrition.”
Lul thanked the aid agencies for the intervention and said residents had also been promised food airdrops starting Monday.
Mary Nyathum Kher, a resident and women’s leader, welcomed the supplies but said more assistance was needed.
“We are happy for the supplies because people are suffering a lot in the county, especially mothers and children facing malnutrition,” she said. “But the supplies are not enough, and we still need further support.”
