6 killed, 6 wounded in Ruweng cattle raid

The authorities in the Ruweng Administrative Area (RAA) have reported that six people were killed and six others wounded during a cattle raid in the Pan Lou area in Pariang on Thursday.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Thursday afternoon, the area’s Acting Information Minister Monylang Minyiel Thowel accused armed youth from neighboring Unity State of the attack that saw 1,000 head of cattle raided.

“What happened in Ruweng on Thursday was that the criminals from Unity State attacked the Pan Lou area in the Ruweng Administrative Area and raided 1,000 cattle. They killed three herders and wounded 6 others,” he said.

According to the minister, three of the attackers were killed, but the injured members were not found.

“Three of the attackers were killed…we found their bodies on the ground following the attack, but we did not find their injured members,” he stated. “They are hailing from the Unity State because they normally mobilize themselves to carry out attacks against the Ruweng Administrative Area, as you heard in the past months.”

He revealed that efforts are underway by the local governments of Unity State and Ruweng Administrative Area to contain the situation and return the rustled animals to their rightful owners.

A resident of Ruweng, Kat Ngor, confirmed the attack but put the figure of the injured at eight.

“1,000 cows were stolen, three cattle keepers were killed, and eight were wounded at midday on Thursday, and the army is pursuing them,” he said. “The armed youth who carried out the attack came from Rubkona and Guit counties in Unity State because they had carried out a similar attack last month.”

Unity State authorities were not available for comment.
