19 women complete tailoring training in Morobo

Nineteen women in Morobo County, Central Equatoria State, graduated over the weekend from a life skills training program aimed at boosting economic resilience and peacebuilding in the area.

The six-month tailoring course, funded by the Reconciliation, Stability, and Resilience Trust Fund (RSRTF), was implemented by the Support for Peace, Education and Development Program (SPEDP). The initiative supports stability and empowerment efforts in the greater Yei region.

Isaac Batali, a program officer with SPEDP, said the women received startup tailoring tools but noted budget constraints prevented the provision of full sewing machines.

“We initially recruited 30 women, but 19 completed the training,” Batali said. “While we couldn’t provide all the equipment needed, we hope these tools will help them begin small businesses.”

He urged local authorities to strengthen women’s associations to ensure future programs run smoothly. “The county should help organize these groups so they can better access support,” he added.

Jennifer Ide, one of the graduates, praised the program and called for expanded training in hairdressing and catering. “This skillset will help me overcome financial struggles,” she said.

Christian Komoni, a SPEDP case worker, said many women lack mentorship and resources. “With proper support, they could grow their businesses, like tailoring or selling bedding and soap,” he said.

Ezbon Gale, Morobo County’s executive director, pledged to revitalize the local women’s association. “We must act quickly—next week, we’ll discuss how to reactivate this group,” he said.

The RSRTF-backed program is set to end in November, leaving beneficiaries and officials urging sustained efforts for women’s empowerment.
