The local authorities in Warrap State said 19 people were shot dead and 14 others wounded on Monday morning as communal violence intensified among the Tarweng Section of the Apuk Jurwiir Community in Wath Alel Payam, the Yar Community in Mabior Yar Payam, and the Thony Community in Manyangok Payam in Tonj South County.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Tuesday afternoon, Warrap State Information Minister William Wol Mayom confirmed the fighting and casualty figures.
“We got a report on Monday morning at around 5 a.m. from the authorities in Tonj South County that individual criminals from Mabior Yar Payam, in coordination with some elements from the Tarweng Subsection of Apuk Jurwiir, attacked the Manyangok Community, targeting the villages of Ajiwel and Manyin were 19 people from both sides were killed, and 14 others sustained gunshot injuries,” he said. “It is also reported that an unidentified number of houses were burnt to ashes, leaving many families homeless.”
When asked about the cause of the fighting, Minister Wol said there has been a nonstop cycle of frequent revenge attacks among the feuding communities since 2025. He called for an independent investigation into the recent attack.
“The conflict has been between the communities since late 2025, and it could be related to the cycle of persistent and revenge attacks, but this recent attack requires an independent investigation,” he added.
According to the minister, the Warrap State Government has deployed armed forces comprising South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) and other organized forces, such as the police, among others, to contain the situation in the area.
