White Nile State teachers protest union deductions

A number of secondary school teachers in the two provinces of Kosti and Guli, White Nile state have protested against trade union deductions from their monthly salaries. Some of them interviewed said that the union deducts at least 6 pounds per month from their salaries without their permission. Moreover, the teachers claim that it is not carrying out its duties in caring for the welfare of the staff. They further condemned the so-called social fund which is affiliated to the union and expressed that the services this body offers are only enjoyed by a few teachers. In the same demonstration, teachers called for the dissolution of the trade union in order to establish their own with members elected democratically. This process, they claimed, would result in the representation of workers in a transparent manner and without discrimination.
