16 days of fighting violence against women concludes in Yida

Saturday saw the concluding celebrations in Yida refugee camp of the international 16 day campaign to fight violence against women which ended today. Celebrations at Yida camp, which accommodates refugees from South Kordofan, included all of the camp’s sectors, spanning civil society and international organizations. Mrs. Najda Romi, the Yida women’s program coordinator, claimed that women are playing a great role within their families and societies and are equal to men in any aspect of life. She went on to condemn gender-based violence which, she claims, is too common a problem but praised organisations who work in this area. Celebrations of the ‘fighting violence against women’ campaign began on the 25th of November. They included various activities in the camp such as drama and cultural performances to sensitise people to the equal status women are entitled to.
