Sudan: Troops deployed between feuding Hamar and Ma’alia tribes

Forces were deployed on Saturday to secure a buffer zone between the territories of the feuding Hamar and Ma’alia tribes following fresh clashes between the two Arab tribes on Friday.

At least 29 tribesmen were reported killed and 23 others injured in fighting on Friday.

Odaya Locality Commissioner Adam Aqidat claims the situation is stable following the deployment of government forces in areas of friction. The government has apparently identified a dividing line between the two warring tribes to avert further escalation.

Sudan’s parliament speaker El Fateh Izz al-Din has formed a committee of MPs representing both sides to prepare for a reconciliation conference on 12 June in al-Fula town in West Kordofan State.
