SPLM-IO appoints military governor for Unity State

SPLA-IO-appointed governor of Unity State, Koryom Dhoal Lingling

The opposition Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO) has appointed a military governor and deputy for Unity State, according to a statement seen by Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday.

Acting Chairman Oyet Nathaniel Pierino said the appointments were made under provisions of the SPLM-IO constitution and resolutions adopted at party conferences in 2014, 2016 and 2020. The decision took immediate effect.

The newly appointed governor, Koryom Dhoal Lingling, is expected to be based in Leer County, in Adok payam, according to local sources.

Residents expressed concern the move could heighten tensions in the oil-producing state, where rival forces have previously clashed.

“There are fears of violence between SPLA-IO and SSPDF because the leadership may not operate in the same areas of Unity State,” said Khor Gatluok, a resident.

Civil society groups also reacted cautiously.

Simon Gatdet, chairperson of civil society in Unity State and a representative of the Community Link Action and Development Organisation (CLADO), confirmed the appointment and called for restraint.

“As civil society, we are calling for dialogue among the parties to the 2018 peace agreement. This is the only way to return the situation to normal,” he said.

Unity State has remained volatile despite the 2018 peace deal aimed at ending years of conflict between forces loyal to President Salva Kiir and those aligned with suspended First Vice President Riek Machar.

Machar, a key party to the agreement, is currently in detention in Juba and faces treason charges before a special court.

The SPLM-IO is being led in an acting capacity by Oyet Nathaniel, Machar’s deputy, who is in exile.
