South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit on Monday replaced a number of officials in his office and the Deputy Director General of the National Security Service’s Internal Security Bureau.
Kiir removed Lt. Gen. Chol Agoth Deng as deputy director general for administration and finance of the Internal Security Bureau, replacing him with Lt. Gen. John Manut Wol, who was promoted from major general.
The Internal Security Bureau, one of the country’s most powerful security institutions, has extensive authority, including the power to arrest individuals without a warrant.
It is currently led by Gen. Charles Chiec Mayor, who was appointed director general in February.
The president also dismissed Ambassador Ajing Deng Ajing as chief of state protocol in the Office of the President, appointing Yar Peter Machar in his place.
Machar was promoted to grade one ambassador.
Additionally, Dominic Juuk Chom was removed as executive director in the Office of the President, with Ajing Deng Ajing taking over the role.
In the national parliament, Kiir appointed Madut Arop Madut as a lawmaker, filling the seat left vacant by the death of his father, Arop Madut Arop. The late lawmaker represented the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly.
The changes were announced on the state-run South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC). No reasons were given for the reshuffle.
