South Sudanese kickboxer challenges Nigerian champion

South Sudanese kickboxer James Kuol has challenged Nigerian fighter Obinka Afam to a match on the South Sudanese independence day 9 July.

Puro Okelo, head coach of the South Sudanese kickboxing team, told Radio Tamazuj he wanted to announce the event to South Sudanese all over the world as a way of encouraging unity among the people.

“We are one nation, one blood, one dream for our homeland South Sudan,” said the coach.

In an announcement on its website, the World Kickboxing Federation-Africa described the fight as “the next high class event,” adding, “Local hero and superstar James KuoL has challenged our current African continental Champion from Nigeria.”

“Now is the real showdown, at home in his town, with his fans behind. A tough challenge for Obinka anyway. But we all saw him fighting and winning by KO in second round in Nairobi and a real battle is expected,” added the announcement.

Obinka won the continental title at an event in Nairobi on 29 March, according to WKF-Africa.

Kickboxing is a mixed martial arts sport that originated in Thailand. The upcoming fight is scheduled to take place at Home and Away, a Thai restaurant located in the capital Juba.
