RSF accused of killing pharmacist, arresting four in West Kordofan

Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) killed a pharmacist in En-Nahud, West Kordofan state, and arrested four people from nearby areas over alleged links to the former regime of deposed leader Omar al-Bashir, the Dar al-Hamar Emergency Response said.

Azzam Hamid, a spokesperson for the emergency response group, told Radio Tamazuj on Wednesday that Asim Suleiman, owner of Yassin Pharmacy in En-Nahud, died on Tuesday from gunshot wounds sustained in an attack three days earlier.

Hamid said RSF fighters allegedly opened fire on a vehicle carrying Suleiman and his companions as they travelled from a market in the Tureya area towards Ghabsha Jaber, within En-Nahud locality.

“The pharmacist and his companion were attacked when they returned from Ghabsha Jaber within En-Nahud locality,” Hamid said.

The circumstances surrounding the shooting, including the motive for the attack, remain unclear.

The emergency response group also said the RSF had arrested four people from areas near Salamit in En-Nahud locality over alleged links to the former regime. It described the allegations as unfounded and the arrests as arbitrary.

“These are some of the practices being carried out by the RSF against innocent civilians in En-Nahud and other northern localities in West Kordofan,” Hamid said.

According to the group, the four detainees were initially taken to En-Nahud prison before being transferred to a prison in Nyala, the capital of South Darfur state. The group did not identify the detainees or provide further details about their legal status.

The emergency response said the killing and arrests reflect what it described as continuing violations against civilians in the northern localities of West Kordofan.

RSF officials in West Kordofan could not immediately be reached for comment.

The allegations come amid Sudan’s conflict, which erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF. The war has displaced millions of people and severely disrupted essential services and civilian life.

En-Nahud is under RSF control.
