New pediatric center opens in Nzara County

Western Equatoria State’s government, the Catholic Diocese of Tambura-Yambio (CDTY), and the Sudan Relief Fund USA on Friday inaugurated a new pediatric center at St. Theresa Mission Hospital in Nzara County, a major step in improving child healthcare in the area.

Hundreds of residents attended the opening ceremony of the Graham Pediatric Center, which will provide specialized care for critically ill children, stabilize emergencies, and support recovery.

Dr. Taban Loponi Charles, the hospital’s medical director and an obstetrician-gynecologist, said the facility has expanded its staffing.

“We now have 17 nurses, 18 midwives, four clinical officers handling outpatient care, two anesthetic officers, and four laboratory technologists,” he said.

David Dettoni, vice president of Sudan Relief Fund USA, stressed the organization’s long-term commitment.

“We don’t just fund projects and leave. This center was planned years ago with input from our founder in Australia and strong local support,” he said.

Daniel Badagbu Rimbasa, the state’s acting governor, praised the initiative as a milestone in healthcare development.

“This facility represents hope for our children. Our government is dedicated to backing efforts that enhance public well-being,” he said.

Bishop Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of CDTY, who leads the Community Development Program (CODEP), thanked donors for their contributions.

“Their support is transforming lives in Nzara and beyond,” he said.

The center will serve as a referral hub for pediatric cases across Nzara County and neighboring areas.
