At least two civilians were killed in an attack on Thursday night in Jebel Boma town, headquarters of Jebel Boma County in South Sudan’s Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA), authorities said.
Jacob Werchum Jouk, the GPAA information minister, told Radio Tamazuj the two civilians were returning home from a market when they were ambushed.
“These two people were attacked on a road on the outskirts of the market at 10 p.m. They were returning to their homes and were killed,” he said.
Jouk said the assailants fled the scene and were unsuccessfully pursued by local youth.
“These attackers fled to Kuren in the Kapoeta area. We condemn the attack,” he said.
Calls to the Eastern Equatoria state information minister seeking comment were unsuccessful.
Violent conflict has plagued the GPAA and parts of Eastern Equatoria State in recent months, leading to the suspension of a lifeline road linking Pibor to Juba through Eastern Equatoria.
The violence reached a peak when the commissioner of Kapoeta East County was killed in a road ambush.
