The government of Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) on Friday received 6 abductees after they spent over a month in captivity after they were kidnapped by armed youths from Jonglei State who invaded their area in December last year.
The former abductees including a mother and her 3 children and two other children, were rescued in Bor and Uror counties in an ongoing recovery mission, according to Jonglei State Information Minister, John Samuel Manyuon.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj over the weekend, Abraham Kelang, the GPAA information minister, confirmed that they received the former abductees on Friday afternoon and that arrangements were underway to have them reunited with their families.
“The government of Jonglei State, through our partners, on Friday handed over to us 6 persons who were abducted from Gumuruk during the recent violence,” Kelang said. “They include a mother with her 2 boys and a girl and other two boys. They are still in our custody and will be reunited with their loved ones soon.”
Meanwhile, Machot Gatluak Kenyjak, the Uror County commissioner, said they were committed to recovering any abductees within Uror but warned that such efforts could prove futile if armed elements from the Greater Pibor area continue to carry out attacks and lay ambushes. He called on GPAA counterparts to emulate their efforts.
