The Juba Film Festival and the Orupaap Nature Arts Festival, key annual cultural events marked significant milestones with resounding success. The steadfast support from the German Embassy has played a pivotal role in the growth and triumph of both festivals.

The 8th edition of the Juba Film Festival concluded successfully this year, showcasing over 50 films, each a vibrant portrayal of South Sudan’s rich culture and heritage. Founded in 2016 by South Sudanese filmmaker Simon Bingo and Mama Joice, the festival has evolved into a cornerstone of cultural expression in the country.

Expressing gratitude, Joice stated, “Germany provided the initial contribution to the festival, and their ongoing support has been crucial to our success. We are immensely grateful for Germany’s commitment to fostering culture and art in South Sudan.”

“Despite the absence of a film school and commercial cinema in the country, the festival has been a testament to the resilience and creativity of South Sudanese filmmakers,” assert the founders.

Screened at various locations, the films culminated in a grand award ceremony at Nyakuron Cultural Centre. The honoured films, actors, and producers explored themes such as peace, unity, reconciliation, gender equality, human rights, gender-based violence, girls’ education, justice, and freedom of speech.

The Orupaap Nature Arts Festival has also become a vital hub for the artistic community in Juba. Operating under the theme, “Voice of Humanity,” the festival aimed to amplify the artistic talents of girls in South Sudan. Established in 1987, the Orupaap Cultural Foundation has played a pivotal role in promoting the diverse local dance, singing, and traditional music of South Sudan. The foundation has been instrumental in shaping the cultural identity of young South Sudanese artists.

The recent Orupaap Nature Arts Festival welcomed a diverse group of talented South Sudanese female students and artists from East African countries. Their active participation added a distinctive touch to the event, offering young South Sudanese artists a valuable platform for learning, growth, and collaboration on both regional and international levels.

Both festivals acted as catalysts, fostering networking and collaboration among artists while creating a sense of community within the creative industry. Additionally, they played crucial roles in raising awareness and advocating for the rights of marginalized communities. Festival directors emphasize the festivals’ commitment to empowering local artists to produce high-quality works capable of competing on the global stage.

Dr. Björn Niere, Chargé d’Affaires at the German Mission, expressed pride in supporting these festivals. He stated, “We are proud to support these festivals, which not only showcase the rich cultural heritage of South Sudan but also provide a platform for young artists to express themselves and tell their stories. We believe in the transformative power of arts and culture and their contribution to shaping strong and resilient societies.”

Ms. Beate Mueller-Grunewald, retired German Embassy staff affectionately known as the ‘Mother of Orupaap Cultural Foundation’ by Orupaap’s leadership, emphasized, “Art and culture are the soul of a society. They tell the stories of its people—their hopes, struggles, and triumphs. Supporting the Orupaap Nature Arts Festival and the Juba Film Festival has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my career.” During her tenure at the German Embassy, she actively promoted South Sudan’s rich cultural heritage.

This partnership underscores Germany’s active commitment to supporting culture and the arts, particularly in countries like South Sudan, where such initiatives can have a transformative impact.

The Juba Film Festival and the Orupaap Nature Arts Festival expressed heartfelt thanks to all attendees, artists, and supporters for their participation and eagerly anticipate hosting another successful event next year.
