Chief killed in Pochalla attack

The police in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area’s (GPAA) Pochalla South County said the community chief of Lokri Village, Okongo Omot Okoth, was killed in an attack by armed assailants at the outskirts of Pochalla Town on Thursday.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj on Friday, Colonel Amati Ochan, the Pochalla Police inspector, said the deceased community leader, accompanied by two people, was waylaid near the Akobo River, where they had gone fishing.

“On Thursday, a group of three men, including the chief of Lokri, Okongo Omot Okoth, was attacked near Akobo River, where they had gone for fishing,” he said. “These people had just left their residence, and they were attacked just 8 kilometers away.”

The police chief said local youth had left on Friday morning to retrieve the body. He claimed the suspects could have come from the neighboring Pibor County.

“Once the youths who left this morning to recover the body return, we will have full details,” he said. “What we know is that these attackers opened fire while moving towards Labrab in Pibor – so they could have possibly come from there.”

For his part, Jacob Werchum Jouk, the GPAA information minister, said they were not aware of the attack.

“As we speak, my office or that of the chief administrator has not received this report,” he said. “Pochalla is part of GPAA. I do not know why we have not been officially served with the report.”
