Businessman shot dead in Aweil East ambush

A local businessman was shot and killed, and more than 3 million South Sudanese pounds (SSP) were stolen in an ambush last Sunday on the road in Aweil East County in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

A government official, speaking to Radio Tamazuj on condition of anonymity Saturday, said Garang Deng Mathiang is the prime suspect in the killing of Yai Chuor. Investigations are ongoing at Wunyiik Military detention cells.

The attack occurred as the businessman traveled from Majok Yinhthiou to Wanyjok. He was ambushed between Rumdier and Mayom Rok in Warguet Payam, the source said.

“The victim was carrying a sack of sorghum and the money when he was stopped by armed men,” the official said. “He was ordered off his motorbike, and when he resisted the theft, the assailants shot him five times in the chest.”

Piol Malong, a resident of Majok Yinhthiou, said the victim had been transporting goods for traders between Wanyjok and Majok Yinhthiou.

Thiep Deng Akol, chairperson of the Aweil East County Youth Association, condemned the attack and urged peace in the area.

“We want Aweil East to be a peaceful county,” he said. “I call on the youth involved in such crimes to stop immediately.”
