W. Bahr el Ghazal governor donates medicine to Lakes State

The caretaker governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State, Sheriff Daniel Sheriff, has donated medicines to Rumbek State Hospital in Lakes State to treat victims of intercommunal violence that started on the outskirts of Rumbek Town and spilled into the town on 9 October 2026.

The donation under the theme “In solidarity, Western Bahr el Ghazal State caretaker government support to the people of Lakes State with medical supplies for victims of recent clashes” was received by Lakes State Caretaker Governor Rin Tueny and Dr. Makur Matur Koriom, the state’s health minister, at Rumbek State headquarters on Monday.

Dr. Matur Koriom thanked the Government of Western Bahr el Ghazal State for the donation.

“I take this opportunity to thank my colleague, the Minister of Health, and the caretaker governor of Western Bahr el Ghazal State and the staff of Wau Teaching Hospital for the magnificent donation to Rumbek State Hospital,” he said. “We look forward to continuing to work together, collaborate in the spirit of one people in one region so that we can address our challenges. The total number of people we lost during the clashes was 40 and others were injured.”

For his part, Joseph Moses Ugudo, the caretaker health minister in Western Bahr el Ghazal State who delivered the medicines, said he was delegated by his governor to deliver the donation.

“We came with a small medical donation from Wau to support our Rumbek State Hospital, particularly our civilians, the victims of gun violence in Rumbek Town,” he said. “We have been warmly welcomed by the caretaker government and the people of Lakes State. The message from our caretaker governor, Sheriff Daniel Sheriff, to the people of Lakes State is to embrace peace and unity.”

For his part, Lakes Caretaker Information Minister William Koji Kirjok said Governor Tueny received the medicine and handed it over to the health ministry.

“The donation of medical supplies came in a lot of cartons, and those who are going to receive the treatment will be healed,” he said. “This is a good gesture, and we have to unite as the people of Bahr el Ghazal region. We thank the people of Wau and let this spirit continue.”

Meanwhile, Daniel Laat Kon, the chairperson of the civil society network in the state, lauded the Government of Western Bahr el Ghazal State for the donation.

“The medical supplies were delivered in a vehicle branded with words of solidarity,” he said. “The medicines came at a critical time when the Rumbek State Hospital is overwhelmed with casualties following the recent deadly clashes in Rumbek Town that left over people dead and over 100 wounded, including women and children.”

Laat urged the hospital’s management to ensure the medical supplies reach the intended beneficiaries.
