South Sudan President Salva Kiir arrived on Friday morning in Wau, Western Bahr el Ghazal State, at the start of a visit to the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region, state officials said.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj in Wau, State Minister for Roads Julius Bensensio Mugu said the visit aimed to strengthen peace and prepare for upcoming elections.
According to Mugu, the president is expected to continue his tour to Akon in Warrap State and later to Northern Bahr el Ghazal.
“General Salva Kiir Mayardit has just arrived in Western Bahr el Ghazal state after a long time,” Mugu said. “Last week we received Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi Akol, and right now the president has just arrived at Wau airport. Citizens of Wau and other states have come to welcome him.”
Thousands of residents turned out in Wau to receive the president.
Kiir is accompanied by senior government officials.
He is expected to address a public gathering at Wau stadium later on Friday before travelling to Warrap State.
