Peace, Ebola prevention top agenda during UK envoy’s W. Equatoria visit

The British Ambassador to South Sudan, Ashley David William, has visited Western Equatoria State for the first time, reaffirming the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting peace, development, humanitarian assistance, health, education, and conservation efforts.

The envoy, accompanied by officials from the British Embassy, met Governor Badagbu Daniel Rimbasa, state ministers, and the speaker of the state parliament to discuss key issues affecting the state and areas of cooperation between the UK and South Sudan.

The Ambassador said the United Kingdom remains one of South Sudan’s strongest partners and that peace remains at the center of its engagement with the country,” he said. “Peace is the basis on which this country and this state will develop.”

Ambassador David emphasized that stability is essential for progress and prosperity.

The discussions focused on peace and stability, humanitarian support for conflict-affected communities, and assistance to internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees affected by insecurity.

The envoy noted that improved security conditions have allowed some displaced people to return to their communities, but they still require support to rebuild their lives and secure their future.

The meeting also addressed health and education services, including preparedness measures to prevent Ebola from reaching Western Equatoria State and South Sudan.

Governor Badagbu expressed appreciation for the continued support from the United Kingdom, particularly in peacebuilding, humanitarian assistance, and development.

“Peace and stability are key to development, and we appreciate the support given to Western Equatoria and South Sudan,” he said.

The governor also highlighted conservation efforts as an important area of cooperation, including the protection of national parks, biodiversity, and the environment in Western Equatoria. He welcomed Ambassador David to the “Green State” and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with partners to promote peace, stability, and sustainable development.
