The newly appointed commissioner of Awerial County in Lakes State, Abraham Biar Dhieu Akujang, has pledged to prioritize education and healthcare.
Biar officially assumed office on August 31 during a welcoming ceremony at the county headquarters in Mingkaman. He replaces Philip Mawut Garang, who served as Awerial commissioner for four years.
The new commissioner said his administration will focus on increasing school enrollment and improving access to health services across the county.
“Education and health will be given priority in Aliab land,” Biar said.
His pledge comes amid concerns over declining school enrollment in Awerial County. More than 20 schools outside Mingkaman town have reportedly closed, leaving only 19 schools operating across the county.
Community leaders are calling for urgent measures to reopen the closed schools. Education stakeholders have linked the decline in enrollment to limited community support, cattle keeping, domestic responsibilities, and cultural activities, which continue to keep some children away from school.
The new administration is now expected to work with communities and education stakeholders to address these challenges and improve access to basic services across Awerial County.
