EU concerned over bombing of hospital in Sudan

The delegation of the European Union in Sudan on Sunday expressed concern over the bombing of a hospital located in Sudan’s South Kordofan state. Several bombs landed on the premises of the health facility on 1 and 2 May, but did not kill anyone.

In a statement, the diplomatic mission said the targeting of the Mother of Mercy Hospital in the Nuba Mountains was ‘concerning.’ The diplomats said that the failure to differentiate betwee military targets and civilian targets could constitute a war crime.

The mission pointed out that hospitals are protected by international law, because they are civilian facilities that should be protected.

The statement furthermore, called on the government and the SPLM-North to facilitate humanitarian access to the civilian population affected by the conflict in Blue Nile and South Kordofan States, and for both parties reach a peace deal.
