At least 49 people were killed and 33 others wounded in communal clashes involving Pan Ariik in Alabek Payam in Tonj North County, Warrap State, and their allies from Mayom County in neighbouring Unity State, a state government official said.
The clashes, which took place on Aug. 27, also involved Pan Arek and Apuk Padoc subsections in Akop and Alabek payams in Tonj North County, according to the official.
Warrap State Information and Communication Minister William Wol Mayom confirmed the casualties in an interview with Radio Tamazuj over the weekend.
“On that day (Aug. 27), 49 died on the spot and 33 were wounded from all sides of the conflict,” Wol said.
He said 21 of those killed had been identified as armed men from Mayom County in Unity State, while two were from Apuk Padoc and the remaining 26 were from Majak and Alabek.
Wol said the situation has returned to normal after organised forces were deployed in the affected areas.
He added that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) had airlifted seven severely wounded people to Juba for treatment.
“The situation became calm after the incident, and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has airlifted seven severely wounded persons to Juba, and another seven will be airlifted tomorrow to Wau for treatment,” Wol said.
