Lakes State Acting Information Minister William Koji Kirjok on Tuesday confirmed that the suitor of a girl killed the latter’s two brothers in Cueibet County on Monday.
He said the man escorted the girl to their home, where a disagreement might have ensued, leading to the killings.
“Yesterday (Monday), there was an incident that happened over a girl, but it needs to be investigated well. A guy went to engage a girl, and it seems he differed with her brothers,” he explained. “In the process, he shot the girl’s two brothers, and they died on the spot. The security forces are pursuing him, and I know he will be arrested and brought to book.”
“My message to those who take the law into their hands is that they will be held accountable,” Minister Koji added.
For his part, John Aluak Machut, the executive director in Cueibet County, confirmed the incident, said it happened in a cattle camp, but that calm has been restored.
“We have handed over three suspects, including the murderer who caused the fighting, to the police, and they are in custody,” he said.
Meanwhile, Daniel Laat Kon, the coordinator of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) in Lakes State, condemned the killings and advised the communities to stop fighting over girls.
“We had about the incident in which a man killed two people, and he was also injured by the father of the deceased using a spear. It has been common in Lakes State that when you hear about fighting or conflict, it often starts over a girl,” he said. “Our communities need to stop this madness of fighting and killing because of a girl. Our people use girls as resources, and that is why people are dying because of girls.”
“We urge the government to intervene and bring the suspect to book, and for the two families to dialogue, not resort to revenge, and let the government handle the matter,” Laat added.
