The United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA) on Wednesday reiterated the strong condemnation by UN Secretary-General António Guterres of the drone attacks that occurred near Amiet Market and Todach, some 15 Kilometers from Abyei town, on 19 October 2026.
In a statement extended to Radio Tamazuj, UNISFA said it is deeply concerned by the attack, which represents a serious threat to peace and security in Abyei.
“Dozens of people were killed and injured, with the toll expected to rise as the assessment and evacuation of casualties continue. Many people are still reported missing,” the statement reads in part. “UNISFA reiterates its concern over the targeting of civilians and extends its deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wishes a swift recovery to the injured.”
UNISFA said it is taking all measures to strengthen security in the area and has intensified day and night patrols to protect civilians.
“Our peacekeepers are continuing to provide emergency medical assistance, support the evacuation of casualties, and have extinguished most of the huge fires in the area,” the statement said. “UNISFA commends the collaboration of the relevant authorities and communities and continues to closely monitor the situation.”
“We urge all parties to refrain from any retaliatory actions that could further endanger civilian lives and undermine peace and security. UNISFA remains committed to implementing its mandate to promote peace and stability in Abyei,” the statement concluded.
