At least three people, including two security personnel, one from the army and another from the wildlife service, and one civilian, were killed over the weekend in Achong-Chong Payam of Jur River County in Western Bahr el Ghazal State.
Speaking to Radio Tamazuj via telephone from Marial-Bai, Jur River County Commissioner Santino Manut Akec said the suspected criminals came from neighboring Apuk Giir Thiik in Warrap State and stormed a cattle camp, killing three people and wounding another.
He added that the raiders made off with 21 head of cattle and that security forces are currently pursuing the attackers.
“What happened in Achong–Chong was a raiding of cattle; the criminals came from the Apuk Giir Thiik in an area called Wuntim. They raided 21 farming cattle in Achong-Chong,” he said. “They killed three people. They killed somebody called Mayen from Twic Community who was a sergeant major in the army and a lance corporal called Agau from Abiem Mayar who was a wildlife officer, and also killed a civilian called Chan Liu Achuoro from Kwac South.”
Akec said the wounded victim is currently receiving medical treatment at Wau Teaching Hospital.
The commissioner said the state security visited the scene and that security has been stepped up to apprehend the culprits.
This is not the first time that the Marial–Wau Community has experienced such an attack this year. Earlier in June, a similar incident occurred in the area, during which four people were killed.
Officials said efforts are underway to bring a lasting peace between the two communities.
