Sudan’s Burhan sends message to German chancellor on peace efforts

Sudan’s army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has sent a written message to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz on bilateral relations and efforts to achieve peace and stability in Sudan, Sudanese officials said.

Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi, who is Burhan’s personal envoy, delivered the message to German Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Serap Güler at the German Foreign Ministry in Berlin on Friday. Sudanese Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Muawiya Osman Khalid accompanied Minnawi.

The message addressed ways to strengthen relations between Sudan and Germany, support peace efforts and promote Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue, the statement said.

Sudan’s chargé d’affaires in Berlin, Idris Mohamed Ali, said the visit was part of ongoing communication between the two countries. He said Minnawi had briefed Güler on developments in Sudan and efforts to restore peace and stability.

The German Embassy to Sudan said in a post on X that Germany remains committed to advancing peace efforts, six months after the Sudan Conference in Berlin.

Güler stressed the urgent need for a ceasefire and “truly inclusive and civilian-led Sudanese dialogue”, the embassy said.

Sudan has been at war since April 2023, when fighting erupted between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), triggering a humanitarian crisis and repeated international efforts to end the conflict.
