Poor drainage adds to citizen woes in Kosti

Heavy rains have left pools of stagnant water in Kosti’s broken roads, leaving some residents unhappy with the face of the important White Nile town. Several Kosti citizens expressed their disappointment with the local government, describing the authorities as remote from the concerns of the people. The citizens said that after the heavy rains in the last few days, the local government of the city did not take any steps to prevent and treat the effects of the rain, neither maintaining and cleaning the drainage systems, nor paving roads, nor making any bridges. They cited Jabbour Creek as an example, saying that it has not been cleaned for more than three years. They also pointed with dissatisfaction to a previous contract between the state government and a roads and bridges company for maintenance of some roads in Kosti. Years ago the company started to break up most of the paved roads in the town, in preparation for maintenance, before it withdrew its machines to Northern State in 2009, according to the citizens. They complained that the broken roads had not been maintained till now, wondering about the fate of the budgets for roads maintenance. They pointed out that these roads have become ponds of stagnant water, which threatens the traffic and public safety, and leaves behind a very serious environmental effect.
