Damazin Teaching Hospital in Sudan’s Blue Nile State has resumed specialist surgical services, successfully performing its first ear, nose and throat (ENT) operation following a prolonged suspension, in a development expected to ease the burden on patients across the region.
Dr. Yusuf Mohammed, the hospital’s director, told Radio Tamazuj that the resumption of specialist surgery marked a significant medical milestone.
“The hospital’s operating theatre complex is also handling general surgical procedures, including thyroid and gallbladder operations, orthopedic surgery and urological procedures,” he said. “The successful ENT operation was performed under the supervision of Mr. Abdel-Ghaffar, with the participation of deputy specialist Dr. Hiyam, alongside anesthesia and nursing teams and operating theatre technicians. The patient is in stable condition and recovering well.”
The hospital director said the resumption of services followed comprehensive expansion and modernization works at the operating theatre complex, which increased its operational capacity from three to five theatres equipped with modern medical technology and equipment.
He added that the hospital had also strengthened its specialist workforce, increasing the number of orthopedic surgeons to three. The expansion, he said, would enable the facility to accommodate a higher volume of potential injury cases.
Dr. Mohammed said the restoration of these specialist services would spare patients the hardship and high costs of travelling to hospitals outside the region to access treatment.
He announced that an ENT outpatient clinic would operate every Monday at the hospital’s referral clinics. The hospital is also preparing to introduce endoscopic surgery once the remaining equipment arrives.
