Abyei Hospital concerned by increasing malaria cases

Medical sources in the disputed region of Abyei between Sudan and South Sudan announced that cases of malaria have increased, especially among children.

Speaking to Radio Tamazuj yesterday, a medical doctor working in the Abyei Hospital said the facility receives frequent complaints from the local residents about increasing spread of the disease among the people in the area.

The doctor raised concerns about the spread of malaria among the children especially. He explained though that health organizations scaled up efforts to reduce the disease through training citizens how to spray ponds and swamps with pesticides.

He noted the health organizations operating in the area organized a four-day training for locals last week on how to spray water sources and houses with pesticides in order kill mosquitoes.

“People should not fear, because the type of chemical that was used does not harm human beings and animals,” he noted.

The doctor attributed the increase of malaria among the children to lack of awareness among parents about how to take care for their children.
